Weary Blues

The speaker of Langston Hughes “The Weary Blues” describes an evening of listening to a blues musician in Harlem. The repetition of lines and its inclusion of blues lyrics, the poem sets the tone and tempo of blues music. The poem gives readers appreciation of the blues musician. Hughes is singing about how, even though he’s miserable, he’s going to put his worries aside. Even though something has happened in your life, you just can’t give up, like Hughes says, you have to put all your worries aside. You have to keep on fighting if you ever want to get stronger.
The tone of this poem is sad and depressing. Hughes not only expresses his feelings but he represents all African Americans in his poems. He talks about people suffering and racial discrimination. He describes life as if you don’t have freedom than it is better to just die. I like the way he writes his poems, they have rhythm and rhyme to them and it seems easier to read.

  1. I believe that cadet Clontz did a very good job of explaining this poem. She speaks about multiple events in the poem and I believe that she helped me understand the poem a lot better. I also like how she included the tone of the poem in her blog post about it. It shows that she read the poem and thoroughly went through the meaning behind it. In many cases the tone of the poem is a very important factor. It gives you the feel of the poem and the emotions and meaning that Langston Hughes was trying to display while writing this poem.

  2. Ashley has a great explanation of what the poem means to her and how it makes her feel. Ashley is right about how we cant just give up on things when something bad has happened. I agree that the tone is sad and depressing. She makes a great obvservation about the blues lyrics being repeated, to give it a sort of blues music feeling.

  3. Cadet Clontz went into great depth about this poem. I believe that she really understood what Hughes was trying to get across in this poem. She wrote about how the poem makes you appreciate the Blues musician and how Hughes would set his worries aside and just sing. In this time in history Blues music is what kept people going. They set all their problems and worries aside and kept going through them and never gave up. I believe that this poem does a great way of showing us how big of an impact the Blues had at that time.
