Nobody?

For the first blog I decided to discuss Emily Dickinson's poem 288. It reads:

I'm Nobody! Who are you?
Are you – Nobody – Too?
Then there's a pair of us?
Don't tell! They'd advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a frog -
To tell one's name – the livelong June -
To an admiring Bog!

This poem grabbed my attention more than the others because I found it a bit odd. When most people are young they dream of being rich and famous; a superhero, an actor, or a famous athlete. And though these dreams may change slightly as we get older, most people still wish they were famous with all the glamor and glory.

The speaker of this poem does not follow this popular trend. Instead they seem very content with being a “Nobody” and seems to look down or pity the lifestyle of the “Somebody” by saying that their life would is dreary and never any privacy. The speaker would rather have the peace of privacy and enjoy life with friends as a “Nobody” to the rest of the world than to be famous. Many people these days seem to focus more on what they do not have and what they think they are missing out on and forget about everything they have right in front of them. This poem helped me remember all of the blessings that I have in my life and helped me realize that there is more to life than just material things.

  1. This was a nice poem for you to pick Noel because the author attitude is different from most people around today. People now a day crave to have people attention and to be accepted. I believe the point the author was making is that you must first love yourself and be contempt with who you are and let your actions speak for you that is why I believe she told the other nobody to be quiet because I’m pretty sure if we took a survey for people who got in trouble trying to impress someone else the numbers would be outstanding. So I have to disagree with your point about people focusing on what they do not have because you will always have yourself the author was just saying you came into the world alone you will leave out the world alone.

  2. Noel picked a very interesting poem to write about and I agree with her thoughts about it. Everyone seems to be wrapped up in the fame and glory and it's often very hard to find someone who isn't like that. Emily seems very content with being a "nobody" and didn't hide it when she wrote this poem. When the poem said "Don't Tell, they will advertise- You Know!" It reminds me of the scene from Twilight when Eric interviews Bella, the new girl at school and he is so into her "strangeness" that he wants to put it in the school newspaper. Bella quickly repsonds pleading him not to advertise it or put her name or picture out. Bella wants to be a "nobody". I agree with Noel's comments made and am looking forward to reading more of her thoughts throughout this course.

  3. I agree. This poem is very unique. It stands out from today’s society. Most people want attention and will do anything to make a scene just to be noticed. I like how Emily Dickenson writes this poem. She is telling readers that it’s okay to be different. You don’t have to be like everyone else. Who cares what others say or think. Many teenagers fall for peer pressure and begin to worry about what others think of them. This poem makes you want to come “out of the box”, be someone different.

  4. I believe that Noel made a wise decision by choosing this poem to write about. You wouldn’t really think much of the poem when you first read it. But, Noel showed us a completely different way to interpret the poem, and I agree with her statement about people being interested on what they don’t have rather than looking forward to what they have. To add on to what Noel said, I believe that people are taking life for granted. The speaker wants nothing more than to be her own person, yet now-a-days all people want is to be just like everyone else. They don’t see the great things that have sitting in front of them, because they are so interested on what everyone else has.

  5. This is a very good summary of this poem cadet Byers those a really good job. She brings lots of points and idea that seem logical and true. I totally agree with her that everyone when they are young and even when they are adults have dreams, goals that they would like to accomplish or that are just thoughts that inspire and motivate them to go on in life and be better in order to try and reach those dreams or goals. And when you read this poem and see what the author got to say about how he is just happy with what he has and that he is not trying to be anymore of what he already is.

  6. Noel made it more clear for us to look into what she was saying. I didn't think about it before till she just stated it but, i agree when she says she would rather be a nobody and live HER life rather than being famous and living the life she never wanted. She's right when she says people take care for granted what they have and don't think about what's really infront of them. After reading her blog, it moved me more than when I read it he first time. It made me look at it from a different view.
